Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the effects of strain and storage period on egg quality traits of exotic chickens. A total of three hundred and ninety (390) eggs were collected from three different strains of laying birds (Isa Brown, Amberlin Dekalb and Bovan nera black) reared in a reputable integrated farm in Jigawa state. All eggs were individually evaluated for egg quality traits after storage for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. External (Egg weight, length, width, shape index, shell thickness and weight, and percentage shell) and internal (albumen height, length, width, index, pH, yolk height, length, width, index and pH, albumen-yolk pH and Haugh unit) egg parameters were measured. Isa brown had significantly (P<0.001) higher values for egg weight, length, width, shell weight, shape index and Haugh unit than Bovan Nera black and Amberlin dekalb strains, while Bovan nera had significantly (P<0.001) higher values for (albumen length, index, yolk length, width and yolk index). Storage at day 28 had more deteriorative effect than that of days 0, 7 and 14. It was concluded that Isa brown strain had better egg quality characteristics than Bovan Nera black and Amberlin dekalb strains, and storage duration for eggs should be limited to a maximum of 14 days (2 weeks) in order to maintain its quality for consumption.
