Blood Profile Response of Broiler Chicks to Oral Administration of Aqueous Fresh Neem Leaf Extracts

Abstract

A study to investigate the response of broiler chickens to oral administration of aqueous fresh neem leaf extracts (AFNLE). Total of 320 unsexed, 7- day old Cobb broiler chicks were used for the study which lasted 42 days. These birds were divided into two groups of 160, and each group was either administered AFNLE obtained using cool or hot water. Each group was subdivided into 4 groups of 40 birds with 4 replicates containing 10 birds each. The experiment was a 2×4 factorial arrangement in a Complete Randomized Design. Antibiotics was only given to birds on control groups. Treatment groups include; 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% AFNLE of cool and hot water respectively. Results on PCV, haemoglobin and RBC of starter broiler chicks were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by interaction of water temperature and AFNLE concentration. Birds on 0.2 and 0.3% AFNLE obtained from hot and cool water respectively had the highest and similar PCV (36.00±0.71%) and haemoglobin (12.00±0.32g/dl) values. Birds on 0.2% AFNLE obtained from hot water had the highest RBC (2.98±0.06×1012/L) values. Interaction of water temperature and AFNLE concentration affected (P<0.05) creatinine, AST and ALT. Birds on 0.3% AFNLE obtained from hot water had the highest creatinine (2.15±0.18g/dl) value. Birds on 0.1% AFNLE obtained from hot water had highest AST (63.75±4.39 U/L) and ALT (28.75±4.39 U/L) values at the starter phase. At the finisher phase, only MCHC was influenced (P<0.05).  Conclusively, AFNLE did not adversely affect haematological indices and serum biochemical constituents of broiler chickens.
