Performance of Balami Rams Fed Graded Levelsof Mistletoe Leaves (Viscum album)and Sorghum Stover in Semi-Arid Zone of Borno State, Nigeria.
Abstract
The study was conducted to evaluate the Performance of Balami Rams Fed graded levels of mistletoe leaves and Sorghum Stover. Twenty (20) Balami breed of rams with average weight of 30-32 kg were used for the study. The animals were weighed and divided into five (5) groups of four (4) animals per group, each group was randomly assigned to one of the five (5) treatments in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD).The study lasted for 12 weeks. The rams were fed experimental diets at 4% body weight and concentrate (groundnut haulm, cottonseed cake, wheat offal and Maize bran) were also fed at 1% body weight, twice daily at 7:0am-4:0pm, at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% for T1, T2, T3,T4 and T5, respectively. The result of total dry matter intake were range (1.20 -1.24kg/day) and daily live weight gain (0.20-0.29kg/day) showed significant (P<0.05) difference among the treatments. Inclusion of Mistletoe leaves and sorghum stover at 50% levels in the T3 diets of rams gave the best average daily weight gain (ADWG) of 0.29kg/day, final live weight gain of 53.81kg and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 4.21 compared to other treatments. Therefore, inclusion of 50% Mistletoe leaves and sorghum stover T3 (50%MSL+SS) in the diets of rams is recommended.
