Performance and Cost Analysis of Broiler Starter Chicks Fed Diets Containing Rice Milling By-products

Abstract

A 28-day feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of feeding starter broiler chicken with diets containing rice milling by-products. Proximate composition of the byproducts was also determined. Two hundred day-old, Anak Strain chicks (mixed sexes) were grouped into 20 sets of ten chicks each, with similar mean body weights and randomly allotted, 4 sets each, to five experimental diets in a completely randomized design. The treatments were tagged T1 (Control), T2 (10% rice offal), T3 (10% rice bran), T4 (10% rice grain rejects) and T5 (5% rice bran +5% rice grain rejects). Feed and water were provided ad libitum. Growth parameters and economic indices were obtained. The study showed that while rice bran and rice grain rejects are high in energy (3147 and 3337 kcal/kg, respectively) and low in fibre and crude protein, Rice offal is low in energy (1969, ME kcal/kg) and high in fibre (30.07%). Feed intake (33.13-38.57g/bird/day), feed conversion ratio (1.71-1.94) and protein efficiency ratio (1.40-1.72) were positively influenced by the feeding of rice milling byproducts (P< 0.05), but weight gain was unaffected. Cost of feed and feed cost per unit weight gain were reduced and profit margin was better for birds fed rice milling by-products.
