Body Weight and Conformation of Cobb 500 Broiler Strain Fed Different Commercial Feeds in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate body weight and conformations of Cobb 500 broiler chickens
fed different commercial feeds in Zaria Metropolis of Kaduna State of Nigeria. A total of 204 Cobb
500, wing tagged broiler chicks were used. The chicks were allotted to four commercial feeds
namely: feeds A, B, C and D with three replicates for each in a completely randomized design.
Data were collected bi-weekly for individual body weight (BWT), neck length (NL), girth length
(GL), keel length (KL), shank length (SL) and thigh length (TL). The results on body weight and
conformation at all ages showed that all the traits measured were significant (P<0.05) and were
superior for commercial feed C except for NL and SL (4th week), GL and TL (6th week) and BWT
and TL (8th week) respectively which had no significant (P˃0.05) difference. It can therefore be
adjudged that commercial feed C did better in all the performance traits considered. It can
therefore be recommended that commercial feed C could be used by farmers in Zaria for better
growth in this class of birds.
