Influence of Preservation Methods on the Preference of Enterolobium cyclocarpum Leaves by West African Dwarf Bucks

Abstract

The effect of experience and preservation methods on the preference and acceptability of Enterolobium cyclocarpum (EC) leaves by West African Dwarf (WAD) bucks were evaluated in this study. Six experimental diets {Diet 1: 100 % fresh EC leaves (FENT); Diet 2: 100 % ensiled EC leaves (ENENT); Diet 3: 100 % sun-dried EC leaves (DENT); Diet 4: 75 % ensiled + 25 % sun-dried EC leaves (ENENT 75); Diet 5: 50 % ensiled + 50 % sun-dried EC leaves (ENENT 50); Diet 6: 25 % ensiled + 75 % sun-dried EC leaves (ENENT 25)} were offered to twenty (20) adult goats in a cafeteria feed preference study. The crude protein (CP) contents (14.53 – 22.05%) were significantly different (p<0.05) across treatments; being highest in the fresh EC leaves. Reduced concentrations of tannins (74.41 mg/100g), phytate (2.51 mg/100g) and hydro cyanides (4.50 mg/100g) were observed in the ensiled (ENENT) EC leaves. The mean daily intake of the fresh EC leaves was significantly (p<0.05) high (2.87 kg) compared to the intake of the preserved EC leaves/leaves combinations which were generally low (0.35 – 0.57 kg). The coefficient of preference (CoP) was significantly different (p<0.05) across treatments, ranging from 3.20 for fresh EC leaves (FENT) to 0.39 for sundried EC leaves. Diets were preferred in this order: FENT > ENENT 75 > ENENT > ENENT 25 > ENENT 50 > DENT. Thus the bucks preferred and accepted the fresh EC leaves with CoP greater than 1 (unity) because of their high CP contents and previous experience in consuming fresh forages. Also, WAD bucks preferred EC leaves silage to hay because of reduced anti-nutritional factors.
