Analysis of Mobile Phone Use for Agricultural Information among Poultry Farmers in Oyo State, Nigeria.
Abstract
The study analyzed the determinants of mobile phone usage for agricultural information among poultry farmers in Oyo State, Nigeria. Random sampling technique was used in the selection of 171 respondents for the study. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaire and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency counts, percentages, mean) and multiple regression analysis as inferential statistic. The results show that the mean age of the respondents was 43.2 years with majority (76.6%) of the respondents being male, married (88.6%) and about 67% with tertiary education. The poultry farmers used mobile phone to interact and communicate with other poultry farmers (98.8%), Poultry feed/ ingredient sellers (97.7%), Poultry breeders/Day old chicks seller (97.7%), veterinary product marketer (97.7%). researchers (52.6%) and extension agents (30.4%). Agricultural information sourced through mobile phone include: request for drug/vaccine for birds (WMS= 2.68), information on transportation of poultry birds/ poultry products (WMS = 2.65) and information on available of feed ingredient/ concentrates (WMS = 2.64). The factors that determined the mobile phone usage for agricultural information were: age, marital status, household size, poultry farming experience, farm size, number of mobile phone owned and number of other stakeholders interact with. The finding revealed that the extent of mobile phone usage for agricultural information was low among the respondents. The study therefore, concluded that training programme should be organized for poultry farmers in order to build their capacity on how to maximize the potentials of mobile phones for accessing poultry- related information.
