Effect of Feeding Diets Containing Fermented Roselle Seeds Supplemented with Enzymes on Growth Performance, Nutrient Digestibility, Haematological and Carcass Characteristics of Broiler Chickens

Abstract

In a completely randomized design (CRD) experiment, the effect of diets containing fermented roselle seeds supplemented with enzymes on growth performance, haematological and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens were studied. Two hundred and twenty five (225) Ross broiler chickens were used for this experiment. The broiler chicks were assigned to five dietary treatments with three replicates each of15 birds per replicate and forty-five birds per treatment.  Five experimental diets were formulated for broiler starter and finisher phases respectively. Treatment one (T1) served as control diet (0% fermented Roselle seed) while treatments T2, T3, T4 and T5 contain Roselle seed Fermented for 96 hours, Roselle seed Fermented for 96 hours supplemented with protease enzyme, Roselle seed Fermented for 96 hours supplemented with roxazyme enzyme and Roselle seed Fermented for 96 supplemented with protease and roxazyme enzyme, respectively. The result at the starter phase showed that final body weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio and total feed intake were significantly (P<0.05) better in birds fed the control diet compared to all the other dietary treatments. Feed conversion ratio was best in birds fed the control diet (1.81) compared to other dietary treatments. Total feed intake was significantly (P<0.05) higher in birds fed the control diet (1147.55 g/bird). Feed cost/kg gain was best on diets containing fermented Roselle seed at 96hrs only (N194.73). Similarly, at the finisher phase, final body weight, weight gain and feed conversion ratio were significantly (P<0.05) better in birds fed the control diet compared to all the other dietary treatments. Feed conversion ratio was best in birds fed the control diet (1.68) compared to other dietary treatments. Total feed intake was significantly (P<0.05) higher in birds on T3 (2926.00 g/bird). Feed cost/kg gain was lowest in diets containing fermented Roselle seeds at 96hrs only (N166.85). The haematological parameters showed significant (P<0.05) differences across dietary treatments except for heterophil and lymphocyte which showed no significant (P>0.05) differences across dietary treatments. Nutrient digestibility were significantly (P<0.05) higher for birds on T5 for all parameters. The dressing percentage was higher for birds fed the control diet (88.88%) which was similar to T2, T4 and T5. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that fermented Roselle seed supplemented with enzymes in the diet of broiler chickens did not result in improvement in growth performance and haematological parameters of broiler chickens.
